Playgroup and nursery admission: what age should my child start?

Parents often ask, “Is my child old enough for playgroup?” The honest answer is that age rules vary from school to school, and every child is different.

Signs your child may be ready

• Enjoys being around other children
• Can spend a short time away from you without long distress
• Is beginning to communicate needs, in words or gestures
• Shows curiosity about songs, stories and play

What to ask the school

• What is the minimum age for each class?
• How long is the school day for young children?
• How do you help children settle in?
• Do you have an entrance test? (Early years should not.)
